Friday 23rd November

Friday 23rd November

Such a contrast in the weather today, after nearly getting blown off the North Coast yesterday, there is not a breath of wind today!

Feel better for being in bed 9 hours last night that puppy training just about finished me off (and the dog!)
I enjoyed three sets of tennis with AH,MZ and JS today, it was a real treat to play outside and with no wind! Not only good tennis but a huge thank you to AH for providing an ENORMOUS chicken casserole, vegetables and chocolate cake- doubly nice as I am out with the old school crowd tonight so don’t need to worry about feeding the family before I go-result!!

Laughing is so good for you….and I did quite a bit of laughing when I read an article by Jennifer Saunders. I didn’t realise she had breast cancer in 2009; she did look amazing in the photo, and with a positive outlook. I could really relate to a lot of stuff she said, especially about ‘feeling chemical’!

Blog is being posted early this evening with a full update (and photos) to follow on tomorrow!!

Thursday 22nd November

Thursday 22nd November

Fortunately not a repeat of last Thursday’s illness…..although it’s now 9pm and I’m yawning my head off so I think I will have to forego the last episode of ‘Hunted’ and go to bed!

That’s what happens when you get called into work earlier than normal (plus the early morning starts this week!)

Wednesday 21st November

Wednesday 21st November

The brisk hours walk along Grouville beach this morning left me with glowing cheeks, at least that's what I thought it was, then I remembered that one of the side effects of chemo is 'sunburnt' face. The least troublesome so I can cope with that!

Apparently it's 'spend time with daughter day', this includes going into town and doing important jobs like shopping!(we did have to go into social security and sort out her paperwork). I was impressed actually, she had only received the letter from them yesterday and needed birth certificate and various forms which she had sorted and filled in. Obviously takes after her father!

We also negotiated sand street car park (and bought Uni tickets so we don't incur that credit card 20 p transaction, Jersey ay!!)

We contacted hard working son no 3 who had been at his desk since 7am, shock to the system to say the least! He has been conducting important share transfers and 'bossing' it! Actually I think he is quite relieved no mistakes made so far.......anyway we took him out for lunch to break up his day. By the time we had been through the car wash (literally)and visited Waitrose for the daily food shop it was gone 3pm. I was quite pleased when we got home to find that hubby had kindly taken Jessie for a wood walk, it meant that I could unpack shopping, get supper on the go and get a brief sit down before accompanying daughter to her swimming workout at 5.45.

If you happen to be in the snow hill end of town, pop into Barannes, it's a health food shop, but at the back is a big 'juice bar', it's run by my friend GB, and makes fantastic fruit and vegetable juices plus lots of other good stuff, check it out.

I had some really exciting news yesterday, but its a bit of a secret I'm going to keep for awhile, ( well, I think it's exciting!)

I'm taking it easy at badminton tonight, I do not wish for a repeat of last Thursdays debacle, besides I have to go to work or they'll have forgotten what I look like!

Tuesday 20th November

Tuesday 20th November

Has anybody ever worn an earring back to front for an entire afternoon? Ah, just me then…..

Synopsis of MY DAY:-

6.45am GET UP (Have a word with hubby, it’s a States day!)

Dog walk at les Platons/Egypt,

An hour of Zumba class at Maufant,

45 minutes of tennis at Grainville,

Two hours of Chemo at the hospital (only 30 min of actual drug, but saline drips and blood test taken)

An hour of dog walking (In the dark around the lanes!)

Supper and (sit down to watch Larry Crowne- feel good film!)

Over an hour ironing and simultaneous long overdue Skype chat to Aunty B,!!

11pm, start writing blog……

Blood count really good, still 11.1 for haemoglobin, white cells 3.8, neutrophils 2.21 and platelets 164….. long may it continue.

Did I mention ‘running’ to the Pedal Power bike shop to collect my new ‘trunk bag’ that clips onto my bike rack?

I ran into the shop (late for hospital app!) to be greeted by four men, who looked at this slightly deranged female with sparse sticky up hair, perspiring and puffing. They were about to say politely, I believe you have made a mistake madam, this is a bicycle shop, when fortunately the man who had ordered the ‘bag’ recognised me. (I was too breathless and wasn’t able to speak, which did nothing to help my cause to appear ‘normal’) Anyway it’s brilliant and I am very pleased with it!

This is a link to our 'Cool Down' song at Zumba.....It is excellent....enjoyhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XAian48rpRA#

Monday 19th November

Monday 19th November

Our Godson’s 24th birthday today, now he’s married and living in Grouville already!! How time flies.

I had a lovely morning on a furniture hunt with son No.2 this morning; we set off from St Martin with dog at about 9.30am and headed out west. After successfully visiting the chap who was selling wardrobes etc. and agreeing to buy them, we took Jessie for a run on the sand dunes, which she loved.

Of course, after all that travelling and exercise we had to ‘refuel’ before travelling back east. Big Verns for coffee and bacon rolls did the trick, and spending time chatting and catching up with his life was an enjoyable way to spend a morning.

I met two friends for lunch/coffee at the Café Firefly, (thanks not only for lunch, but also for a ready-made supper SW!) I just about had time to walk Jessie again before it was really dark, and then a neighbour came (LW) with some beautiful roses as a surprise for me!

I still had plenty of energy to play badminton this evening, and had some very close games, it was mixed night, so basically the men do all the work! (That’s actually not true).

Sunday 18th November

Sunday 18th November

I enjoyed a bright and breezy walk along St Catherine’s breakwater yesterday morning, although didn’t fancy a dip in the swirling sea!

The weather was so awful that I thought I might as well go food shopping, low in supplies as usual; needless to say it was very busy. A quick dash into town to buy a very necessary pair of red shoes…. And home by 2pm. I did find it a bit ‘upsetting’ in the supermarket (nobody’s fault), saw two people that I recognised and have known for quite a long time and even though I spoke briefly to one of them, it was embarrassing to see the blank stare. I forget that I look so totally different now and with my grey tufty clumps of hair growing out at angles they probably had every reason to run a mile from this strange apparition before them.

I’ve had enough ‘hilarious’ remarks from my brothers re my hairstyles over the years, and now I’m just adding fuel to their fire……  now with my 2cm of uneven patchy growth even my husband said I needed a haircut!!!

We went to a party with a difference last night……let me explain. At 6pm we met at the Grand Hotel for a glass of Champagne, then boarded a ‘party bus’ that took us to the Hospice shop in St Ouen, where we could buy (and then wear) whatever we wanted (The Breakfast Club ‘paid’).

As you can imagine, some folks were fairly conservative (me included) others, particularly some men were far more adventurous!! Quite a few of them found some rather fetching ladies dresses, scarves and hats to put on, which they did with gay abandon (rather too quickly in some cases!)

After about an hour of frivolities and more Champagne we clambered back into the bus and headed out to The Beach house where we enjoyed a three course meal, followed by dancing!! The ‘best dressed’ person of the evening was ….. a cow!! Sensibly we didn’t stay until 1am but left at 11.45, I wouldn’t have liked to have been any of the men at the weighbridge dressed in drag trying to hail a taxi at 1.30am!!

It has been such a beautiful day today, thought I would just take Jess in the meadow and woods as still a little tired from last night’s activities! It was whilst I was scrambling over a tree trunk that I pierced my leg with a broken branch….not a smart move! Applying pressure to the wound (well, that’s what they do in the films) I realised I had no phone, so no calls for any back up assistance, neither was the dog any help, she just carried on chasing wildlife!

Limping back to the house I had to administer my own first aid, and although initially it had bled rather a lot, it wasn’t as bad as it had first appeared. Good job too as I had my Keep Fit class at 10.30am, and then a couple of games of tennis to play!(Anyway, thought I'd give those white cells of mine a run for their money!)

After lunch hubby and I had long walk out around Seymour Tower, it was beautiful down on the beach. I had started to prepare a roast dinner before we left, which all 6 of us enjoyed tonight (and I didn’t have to wash up- bonus!)

A slightly different ‘quote’ tonight…..

"This June, I celebrated my 70th birthday.  Not unusual in itself; lots of folks do.  But, I am a 4-time cancer survivor.
sue-mcmorris-cancer-survivorMy first cancer diagnosis at age 31 left me unable to bear more children.  As the youngest of three children, I thought three little ones would be great.  That was not to be and I felt so blessed to have one child.
Life goes on.  Except for periodic breast biopsies, I was healthy and active, faithful about checkups, for the next 20+ years.
At age 55, I was diagnosed with breast cancer and underwent a lumpectomy with axilary node dissection and radiation.  Physically, I healed quickly.  Emotionally it took longer, perhaps a year.  Over the next two years, a number of friends were also diagnosed with breast cancer and I became a soft-of unofficial support person for them.
In 2004, I was not feeling quite “right” and called the family doctor who ordered an ultrasound.  Within two hours of the procedure, I was told there was a mass in my pancreas, which was probably malignant.  In a mega second my life passed before me as I thought, “I guess this is it,” having heard that pancreatic cancer was inoperable.  Within two weeks I had surgery at Johns Hopkins Hospital.
sue-and-her-husbandThe following year was filled with treatment and healing.  In the middle of all this, my husband Bill and I celebrated our 40th wedding anniversary with a garden party that summer, surrounded by family and friends.  It was a validation of life, our doing that.  “Grab the moment.  Make it work.”
(Sue and her husband Bill, pictured at right.)
Healing once again, I decided to do something new and signed up for ballet instruction. What a joy that was.  In January 2007, I took weekly lessons and was so happy with the experience; it was like walking on air, the elation I felt.
A routine mammogram in May of 2007,  just before my 66th birthday, brought me back to earth.  A cautious radiologist suggested further testing which confirmed a malignancy.  More appointments and testing ensued, followed by surgeries for a mastectomy and reconstruction.  All went well until I was told chemotherapy was highly recommended.  My mind simply would not, could not take it in.  Not again!!
master-gardenerTime and reason changed that.  I began treatments, which my body did not accept well.  With medical guidance and prayers and encouragement from loved ones, I persevered.  Eventually, my body healed and I began to “wake up” to new endeavors.  This year, I have earned sufficient hours to become a certified Master Gardener.
More importantly, I believe I am serving a greater purpose that only God knows for certain.  I’ll continue to live each day to its fullest and encourage others to do the same."
