Our day started with a look out of the window and the comment "well, it doesn't look too different to yesterday".....how wrong we were. The phone rang soon after ...out neighbours were stuck at Gatwick...their rabbit was out in the garden in it's hutch.....would we go and check? Those of us who were at home and "up" donned our winter gear and headed next door...complete with dog, shovels and spades. Before we left, dad discovered that his ski pants had shrunk since he last wore them (!!)...the big pie....his diet starts tomorrow (yet again). Anyway, we needn't have worried...rabbit was fine, in fact, the snow had sealed his hutch up very snuggly (well, that may be a slight exaggeration) but all the same...it was fine. More water, food and bedding and it was out of danger. In actual fact, the rabbit was in more danger of being eaten by the dog...who the last time she saw a rabbit, ran around the field with it in her mouth!! Job done, we were off up the road....
We discovered various vehicles just up the lane from our place....a JEC vehicle that had been (wisely) left by the engineers who were walking down to la Coupe to try to sort out a power cut (fortunately it didn't effect us)...and another van that had been (very UNwisely) driven down our lane by a man who got his driving licence off the back of a cornflakes packet....then we had to help a 4X4 that was heading down the road with a nurse for one of our neighbours.....how lucky we are to have people who help out when the going gets tough. By the time we got back home it was obvious that things had got quite serious during the night.....well certainly there were some serious snowdrifts in our vicinity.
The fireman appeared soon after....he'd had one of those night shifts when he hadn't stopped. It wasn't long before Dad announced that he was off to town for meetings....and the boys (+ Bex) "had" to accompany him as far as the Church, "just in case he needs pulling out".....how little faith we have sometimes! So....dad disappeared off, children disappeared off, and Mother disappeared off with the dog for a long walk... 4 hours later and most of us were all home again with tales of daring do....trees down....cars in drifts....appalling driving...great driving...tractors, diggers, etc...the stories were endless.
It wasn't long before dad was off to the Public Hall to see what he could do to help up there, Mum was walking the dog (again) and Jack was back into town for his next night shift.... with luck he'll have a much quieter night. This evening's supper has been with His Royal Highness....we had missed Countryfile because we were having Mother's Day supper on Sunday last. Iplayer was plugged in to TV....our "dish" on the roof is still not operational apparently...anyway, dad enjoyed shouting at John Craven....every week he shouts at John Craven (in the vain hope he'll be removed from the BBC)...but probably because he wants to see more of that "very nice and knowledgeable Elle Harrison".....words fail us! Mum insisted on leaving the laptop plugged into the TV so she could watch "Call the Midwife".....unsurprisingly, she found herself on her own....we can all think of other things to do.
We're going to let her add some of her photos and say a few words now.....more "snow stories" tomorrow no doubt.
