Tuesday 30th. April

So...we have an internet connection (just) and we're back...but without anything really exciting to report I'm afraid. The boys have all been in the meadow on gorse duties again....they are starting to make progress....dad has been in the States all day....mum has been doing things....and Bex has been at ITEX. The dog is exhausted and the cat is out. The football on the TV is not living up to expectations...but we do have 4 males all sat around watching it offering their own opinions. We really can't work out why each one of them hasn't been offered a top managerial contract with a leading European team??? their opinion are priceless, and most of them are unprintable we're afraid.

Dan had a run along the south coast this afternoon on his Seafaris RIB.....dolphins were the spot of the day, so Dan is on the iPad as we type doing his homework of dolphins. He is determined to be an expert on everything to do with land and sea around our coast. Did we mention that Dan and Richie (the owner of the Seafaris boat) have been spotting Harbour Porpoises at the Ecrehous recently. That's a new one on us.....Dan says they're pretty boring compared to dolphins. Dan says that they're one of the smallest marine mammals...so that's the interesting fact of the evening. Jack is asking what they're doing at the Ecrehous if they're supposed to be in harbours? we concur..... they're poorporpoises....

Dan is now reading his latest Tripadvisor post. Jersey Seafaris ask people to write in if they have a good trip. Apparently there's another 5 star review and  photo....and another mention for Dan. We're also told by Dan that they are Jersey's number 1 Tripadvisor review destination.....so it can't be all bad....they do try hard to look after their guests....the Richie and Dan roadshow.

dad is now starting to wonder when he is going to have time to take his boat out of the water....before he puts it back into the water..........More tomorrow....

Monday 29th. April

An apology is due to our reader....due to lack of internet access we have been unable to post for the past two days....Ma's laptop just has, for some completely unknown reason, refused to connect up to our home wireless network. Today she finally lost the plot.....she had been carrying the said laptop around the house trying to find a signal. Everyone in the house was working away perfectly well with full signals from the various routers we have secreted around in cupboards and wardrobes. She couldn't work it out and in desperation she called the engineer to come down from his office to "sort things out". He took a very short look at the screen and then, moving his hand to the front of the unit, switched on the little button which says "automatic wireless internet access". The machine magically burst into life accessing every website on the planet. Ma wasn't sure to be happy and angry.....at least she should remember the mistake for future reference.

So much has happened since we last communicated....including a sporting first. Thomas has been out this evening playing football....we know, it's totally unprecedented. We knew something was wrong when he turned up after supper with a pair of shorts on.....he admitted that he had been asked to play 5-a-side football. There followed advice from all of us...we know that Tom and physical exercise rarely mix, and when they do the outcome as rarely good. As we type, he has returned barely able to walk...apparently he put on a pair of trainers that appear to have been a size too small. There's little more to say really......is wasn't big and it certainly wasn't pretty. He seems to have blisters on parts of his body he didn't realise existed.

Other highlights include Daniel paddleboarding at the Minquiers with seals yesterday (git) and Jack spending today working at the Airport in a tractor driving capacity. We also now know that Jack was the star of the show at Devil's Hole on Sunday. After spending all day practicing rope drills the call came in from the Station. As Jack was already "kitted up" when they arrived, he was one of the two that descended into "The Hole" and assisted the two that had found it impossible to get back out. Jack was well pleased....apparently the Station only average about 2 genuine rope rescues every year so, with 4 different watches, and a selection of "possibles" on each watch, the actual chances of being properly involved is actually quite slim. It may well be that it's a couple of years before Jack gets anywhere near another rope rescue.

Mother has been stressing about the launch of her new cancer support group this week. the first official meeting of the group is on Thursday evening at The Willows when they have Mr. Sullivan coming in to talk to them.....everyone is welcome...indeed we have ALL been told we MUST attend on pain of death, or at least doing the washing up for the next month. We'll hand over to her now, as she has much to report.....

I don't have time to report anything, far too busy cleaning, cooking and catering for the 'men' of the family plus getting as much publicity for our new 'Gynae Support group'- 6pm-7:30pm on Thursday!

Saturday 27th. April

First off...apologies for the lack of a blog last night....Ma and Pa went to a party out west, in fact so far out west that they had to leave at tea time, only getting back in the wee hours. No one else felt inclined to type, so we woke up this morning to the realisation that our reader had been neglected......in fact our reader informed us this afternoon that they had stayed up very late waiting for a blog to read....apparently they ended up watching the snooker.....so at least now we know where the competition is.

Hot news this evening is that the Fireman has been in action again today (in a professional capacity that is). We see on the internet that Red Watch got called to Devil's Hole this afternoon to rescue two men who had become stuck ....no details yet, but we'll let you know exactly what happened tomorrow after we've been given the low down.

Dan had a cancelled trip to the Ecrehous today....too windy, too cold, too rough.....off to the Minquiers tomorrow hopefully.

Bex at White Rose this afternoon.....trying to struggle through until the end of term, when it will become much easier to balance work, placement and college ALL at the same time.

Tom did some digger driving this afternoon....actually teaching Dan how to drive.....and is off at the Old Court House this evening. He's actually driving one of HIS cars tonight....things must be bad. Incidentallly, the digger is fixed....it didn't catch fire....and it appears to still be operating okay despite the "scare" of getting incinerated.

Ma and Pa have had a quiet day.....you can tell they're becoming lightweights....one late night and they're ruined for the whole day after. this evening they're reduced to watching Doctor Who and The Voice....how sad is that.limited dog walking...limited gardening....no petanque....hopeless.

Let's hope we're all back on form tomorrow.

Thursday 25th April

Had a lovely foggy dog walk on the beach early this morning with the girls, convulsed with laughter at one point when one of our party with panic in her voice questions where her dog was, to find she was stood with him attached to her  lead!!

We made her stand in shame!

We had to wait a long time for the timer, so SS fell asleep......

Mr Option B was out and about by 6:30am taking down those wretched posters and returning the boards to their owners. He had two long meetings today and is now out at La Mare with lots of VIP  French nationalities, something I think he could have done without, especially as I am designated taxi, no wait, a son has offered to ‘do the pick-up’-hurrah!

My car had to go to the garage today, I’ve worn the brakes out, no doubt the v tired politician will add that to my  payment list along with my  recently bought new tyres. Consequently I was ‘on my bike’, as a means of transport to work this afternoon. Getting there  was very pleasant in a downhill, sunny sort of way, my return journey was extremely unpleasant in thick fog, which just seemed to be in the top half of the Island

Puffing uphill towards a junction I spied two ‘lost’ looking cyclists studying a Perry’s guide map. So upon recognising kindred spirit I told them the sunshine was “that way” pointing southwards, and genially offered them my vast knowledge and orienteering skills. Imagine my embarrassment then when I quickly realised I couldn’t see the map properly without my glasses and then becoming flustered couldn’t quite work out where we were, especially after the well-spoken French gentlemen  asked if he was on the A3?!!

Master Seafaris had an excellent trip to the Ecrehous over lunchtime, a sunny oasis in a sea of fog. Apparently they spotted porpoises, not dolphins, anybody else ever seen them?

Wednesday 24th April

The blog has been handed to Tom again as everyone is tired after the events today.

There was a bit of a mad rush this morning as Dad decided he had to be at the Parish Hall super early in order to stand outside all day wearing his hat and St Martins tie.  Various family members joined him over the course of the day and jokes were made about spoiling ballot papers by defacing them with crude drawings and alternative options.  Dad has now got to take down all his posters that he put up, which isn't a 2 minute job but he loves being a politician.

Jack and myself spent the afternoon burning gorse in the meadow.  The dog spent the afternoon with us and when she got home mother commented that she had never seen little Jessie so tired.  The operation initially went well, especially as we were using the digger to load piles onto the fire however the abuse that we were giving our little tonka toy eventually causing one of the hydraulic hoses to break.  This caused an environmental disaster and more importantly stopped us doing any work.  As you can see Jack can barely sit on it without his knees poking out the sides.

Not much else to report and it's late so I will just leave you with this video of some rather amazing gymnasts.

Tuesday 23rd. April

Tomorrow is referendum day.....and we'll all be so glad when it's over.....we're fed up with it. Dad's fed up with sticking posters and putting leaflets through letterboxes....Bex is fed up with having her hands covered in glue after helping to stick posters on boards, the boys are all fed up with having to look at all the posters that Dad has put up around the Parish...... and finally, Ma is fed up with everyone being fed up. We're such a happy clappy family....maybe we could write a song about how happy we are and go around the Parish singing it tomorrow.....that would get people out to vote.

Dad is shouting....GET OUT AND VOTE....and VOTE B......we're ignoring him, as usual.....

Tom post was so successful the other night we're going to let him have another go....here he is;

I am here to offer some balance to the Mr 'Politically Correct' Steve Luce so here goes.

Dad obviously doesn't want to talk about what option you should all vote so I guess I'll have to say it - anything but option A. The general consensus is that voting option A should be punishable by something terrible (by general consensus I mean its my idea and not that of anyone else in my family).  Jack, Dan and myself are voting C because we think Stupid Constituencies are a stupid idea.  Other family members are voting B for some reason, but thats OK as it isn't A.

Anyway enough about politics.  I used mums laptop yesterday whilst she was out.  When I had finished I decided to leave it open on the kitchen table with the Internet browser open on a list of search results detailing 'How to prank your mother'.  I hadn't actually looked at anything but I thought it would be hilarious as it would make her paranoid that we were plotting something.  Bex fed me updates with regard to her behaviour upon finding this 'trap' and it subsequently had Jack, Dan and myself in stitches.

Jack crashed his Land Rover into some woman the other day.  Technically she crashed into him, but that should be obvious considering we're talking about a crash involving a woman.  Strangely her car only lost a bumper where as the crash moved Jack's front axle resulting in a fairly hefty mechanics bill, and more importantly an annoying squeak.  So far this makes Bex the only family member not to have crashed a car at some point.  Oh no wait Jack just told me that she reversed her car into a granite pillar.  Does that count?

Apparently I'm not allowed to say that people should be punished for voting a certain way, so instead i retract that and say that if you vote option A I will be very disappointed.  It think its safe to say that I would not be a very good politician.

Heres a video of some ninja cats that we can all enjoy; everyone knows the internet was made for videos of cats.

Monday 22nd April

Apologies for last night's blog, but it did make me laugh, It was 'published ' before I had a chance to vet it!!

Back to work today (without children), good to see my colleagues again and catch up with what's been happening in the world.

Tried to fit in three racquet sports in today, tennis, racquetball and badminton, they actually compliment each other very well, and as I don't play any particularly well it makes no difference!

Saw some beautiful little bluebells in the woods yesterday, so pretty.....
Bluebell facts...
  • Some estimates suggest the UK has up to half of the world's total bluebell population
  • Despite their name, bluebells can be white. If you see pink ones they are probably Spanish bluebells
  • 71% of native bluebells are found in broadleaved woodland or scrub
  • Tennyson speaks of bluebell juice being used to cure snake-bite. The romantic poets of the 19th century, such as Keats and Tennyson, believed that the bluebell symbolised solitude and regret.
Thank you for the ongoing donations for 'Team Jilly Luce ', only just over four weeks to go!

Sunday 21st April

A two part blog tonight; mum wrote some of it then decided she couldn't be bothered so went off to watch some TV leaving top son #1 to liven it up.

First for the boring mum bit.

A lot has happened since Dan's 21st birthday last year- I had just had my first round of chemo for starters....
Unlike last year we didn't have lots of people around helping us celebrate- which is just as well as the birthday boy was a 'little worse for wear'. suffice to say he got up briefly, and then promptly went back to bed!!

Hubby and I made the most of the sunshine and took Jessie onto the beach before 9am, it was beautiful, and Steve remarked that there were so few people walking- I did point out that most folks at 8:30am would be in bed asleep!

Jack home from his night shift, kindly pumped up my bicycle tyres so I could dust it off from its winter hibernation and whizz off to aerobics.

/* END BORING PART */

Here are some photos that mother decided to add to the post.  First one seems to be her holding a baby.  Apparently it's the newest addition to a St Ouen family.  The mention of St Ouens would usually have me wading into jokes about inbreeding but considering we are talking about a defenceless child I might have to leave those out today.

I might as well mention the name of the child in question: Willow.  Willow's older siblings Barley and Joe can be seen looking confused in the photo below.  The naming of the last two children seems to be following a pattern in that they are named after crops. Barley being a major cereal and 'coppice' willow being a sustainable biofuel.  I can only assume that if there is another 'urchin from the west' it will be called 'Fodder Beet' or if it a somewhat larger baby, 'Broad Bean'.

The last photo seems to be a particularly hungover birthday boy posing behind a cake.

Now for my account of todays events.  I have no idea what happened in the morning but nothing interesting ever happens before lunch so you wont have missed anything.  When I got up Daniel appeared and he looked like this:

He told me that I wasn't allowed to put this on Facebook so on the blog it goes. Happy birthday.

John-Jack-William and my illustrious self frequented the garden in the afternoon with the sole intention of operating various gardening related machines.  Usually in this situation I will attempt to mow increasingly steeper hills until the old man comes outside to inform me about his concern for my welfare citing 'experience' and 'common sense'.  He was obviously busy today as no-one appeared to offer advice.  Usually on his approach he reminds me of the monster from that early 90s PC game called skifree.  I think you will all find the similarities quite amazing.

Once I finished mowing I advised Jack that various hills were 'no problem' for the mini digger that he was operating.  Daniel then appeared with the dog.  The dog chased bees, and then the shadows of bees for a while before Dan took her inside again.  The lawn looked good and Jack was making a mess of the general environment so i left to go watch football.

When i returned there was a lingering smell of curry, although the smell could have been attributed to the dog.  Jack had already left for work where he gets paid to sleep.  Dan had a friend over, and everyone else was on the couch.  Pretty standard Sunday really.

I think I will round this off with a quality joke that we can all enjoy.

"How do you kill a Guernseyman when he's drinking out of a bowl? You hit him on the head with the seat"

Saturday 20th. April

Well, after the comment about the woman of the house taking HER blog back we decided that she shouldn't really be let anywhere near it for a few days.....so that's bad luck to our reader.

It's been a bit of a cracking day weather wise...Pa was out early on the posters and leaflets again.....it's not doing his back any good...but he keeps telling us how important it is. We all absolutely refuse to help....as we can't really see why we should lose our Senators.....WE LOVE SENATORS. Dad spends every evening trying to explain that they (Senators that is) really can't carry on now that everyone is elected on the same day, and for the same length of time.....but, to be honest, we're not really interested. We'll all go out to vote on Wednesday, but we're not all agreed on this referendum thing at all. The sooner it's over the better.....no doubt we'll be arguing about the result next week....and which Option should be the one selected by the States Assembly (right, that's it....no more politics)

Dan got a double trip out to the Ecrehous today.....and crackin' it was too. Some great photos posted on the internet this evening of his "work office", sitting on the shingle, half way to France, looking at blue sky and blue sea. Dan came home with sun burn.....got shouted at by Ma and laughed at by the rest of us all. Maybe he'll take some sun cream with him next time. Did we mention that it's his birthday tomorrow?...probably not....well, he has a charter again tomorrow afternoon, but he's out tonight and I guess we'll let him lie in in the morning as a birthday treat. Sometime this evening Mum needs to make him a cake......but she could do it in the morning because he won't be up early enough to know the difference.

Bex went out with Dad for the second half of the morning putting up posters, but had to be home in time to go off to work at 12:30. She'll be back in an hour. No one comments, but a 1:30 to 9:30 shift is a tough one on a Saturday.....maybe she'll bring home some "reductions" and make us all happy.

Tom went off and cut the lawns (and verges at the top of the field) this afternoon. For some unknown reason he was wearing his fedora (and sunglasses)....he commented that there were some very funny looks from the coachloads of tourists as they drove past....well, it's not every day that you find a field with a man wearing a fedora while driving a rideon lawnmower at the end of it.....something like a scene out of a gangster movie.

Jack was up, out and gone all day....returning only just in time to eat and then go in to work..... he's on nights this evening and tomorrow. We doubt that he'll be allowed to drive his shiny engine in the dark...one step at a time Jack....let's get the daytime driving right first shall we?

Mum and Dad had a couple of "together" moments today. First, they went to petanque for an hour this afternoon. Apparently there were sixteen of them, they all lined up and were given numbers....the numbers are then read off a sheet to work out who plays against who....and M and P found themselves playing against each other....No wonder Dad was in a grump when he came back.....he hadn't played well, AND, worse still, he'd been beaten by Mum.....twice!

Secondly, they both took the dog to the beach this evening....just for an half hour. The poor dog didn't know what was going on.....walking at 8 in the evening? ....anyway, they all went off to Grouville and came back well pleased.

Ma and Pa are planning a trip to St. Ouens tomorrow. Passports are being got out and cars are being fueled for the long journey. Dad has said he will go, but that they have to be back by 5 for the Grand Prix highlights....so that's gone down well with "she that should be obeyed".....Pa may well end up getting left behind.

That's it for tonight...the cat is sitting on the windowsill (outside) and looking hopeful that it might be let in. The dog is also hopeful...if the cat gets let in then she can chase it around the kitchen.

Friday 19th April

Such a lovely sunny day, and so lucky to spend most of it outside enjoying it! Hubby was up and gone before 6.30am on a 'Poster Mission' ensuring that I had fully woken up before he left- so kind!

IT girl went off to do her business presentation at College- (full of fear and trembling), not really, just a little apprehensive.  She was the first one up, her choice apparently, and it went very well, so relaxed now until the next crisis.

Fireman Sam went off to work, and seemed to spend a lot it driving around in his spanky red Fire Engine, well, I suppose you've got to practice as when he gets the emergency he'll need to have his wits about him.

Told the family we are on an economy drive and they had to use the 'older' loaf of bread and crust before starting the new loaf, and as everybody knows old bread makes better toast. I know my mother told me that and I am sure she  would have never fibbed.....

Played tennis this afternoon with CB,FP, and AdF, had three sets and some long rallies, and a few good laughs on the way!

This evening all of us went in different directions, most notably Hubby went to the Public Hall to support his B campaign, all high powered and Very Important (that's with a capital V and I) and I went to the supermarket and got very excited when I realised that as I now have 3G on my phone I could 'Google' the recipe and therefore look up the ingredients I needed as opposed to only buying what stuff I could remember in my goldfish brain!!!

Little things.......

Thursday 18th April

Thought I had better try out some of my Race For Life gear this morning, and so got hubby to take a picture! I don't wish for any 'smartie pants' comments that I look much better from the back with my hood up - thanks!!

Anyone still interested in donating, here is the link to my 'Just Giving' page- and Thank you to all those who have already- my eldest nephew blew my target out of the water, so I've had to 'up' it again!!

I had to take Dan to Castle Quay for his coffee duties this morning, so took the opportunity to take Jessie on her first run on the beach in two weeks- to say she was excited was an understatement!! She had to 'meet and greet' every dog in a half mile radius. One lady kept looking back at me as Jess was leaping and bouncing around her two calm whippet/lurcher dogs, so I hurried up apologising profusely, but she was laughing and said she'd never seen such a happy dog springing all over the place, chasing down seagulls and crows!

Lots of activity re Option B, posters being put up and leaflets dropped through letter boxes, Hubby did manage to get Tom out to help him put up the former, easier with two people. At least his back is slowly getting better, and the quantity of pills has been reduced.

I've had a lovely evening with my friend PdlH we went to the pub for tea and then onto a Fashion Show this evening in aid of J.E.P.S (Jersey England Parent Support) at the Public Hall. It was very well put together and lots of models most of which we knew put on a very professional show.

Wednesday 17th. April

Tonight's excitement has been provided by the Barista...who's been off playing lifeboats this evening. His pager went of conveniently (we were about to allocate washing up duties) with a "crew assemble" signal.....off he went. As Bex said to Ma, "does it remind you of the old days Mum, when Dad used to get a callout and disappear at the drop of a hat?". Oh yes....we've been there before. It transpires that the "crew assemble" quickly turned into a "launch lifeboat", and as Dan was "on station" he got to go. It turned out to be a couple of kayakers off the North coast that had been pushed out to sea by the wind, and couldn't return. They were being picked up by a passing fisherman as the lifeboat arrived on scene. All's well that ends well......and Dan was back home to a second supper by 9....guess he thought he deserved it!

Today Jack has become a person who has had to fill in an insurance claim (for his first time).....that "entertained" us over the dinner table.....Jack said he was so angry by the time he had finished that he wasn't hungry....that's how bad it was! It turned out earlier today that, despite thinking his car was undamaged, he had had some front axle "realignment", and that one front wheel stuck out rather more than the other. A visit to the garage followed, and the news wasn't what Jack wanted to hear.....in true Luce fashion, some parts need to be ordered....but it wasn't as simple as that. Jack had to make a call and arrange to go and see the "third party".....it was all good, but he now has to go through the procedure of submitting the claim (even though it wasn't his fault).....hence the grumpy fireman. Welcome to the real world Jacko!

As for the others of us......Mum has done Mumthings again today....and she's off doing some unnamed sport this evening.

Bex has been continuing her good work at ITEX, but this evening is starting to get stressed about a BIG presentation she has to do at College on Friday. She's booked dad for a practice session tomorrow evening....

Tom is doing the normal Tom thing......off watching football at somone else's house....he and Jack did manage some gorse clearance this afternoon.

Dad finished the States at lunchtime....but only got back home mid afternoon. He has had posters for "Option B" to prepare this evening, and a breakfast meeting tomorrow....after which he tells us he's "off on the campaign trail" trying to get people to vote in his beloved referendum......so good luck to him!

Jessie has her staples removed tomorrow....but looking at the way she has been springing about today there's not much wrong with her.....full of beans doesn't get close to her current activity levels....we suspect she's been missing her long walks, but she should be back to normal exercise routines next week. Did we say "full of beans"?.......judging by the smells coming from the other end of the kitchen she really is full of beans!! How does anything that's still alive manage to create such a wiff? We should bottle it and sell it to schoolchildren...stinkbombsRus...we'd be retiring to the Bahamas in 5 minutes flat.

Tuesday 16th. April

Today's excitement was provided by the (nearly) most qualified driver in the house.....the most qualified is, of course, the old man...but we're sure that he was one of those who knew the Constable and was just "given" an all groups licence. Anyway....a call went out mid morning that the fireman had had " a little biff" in his Land Rover. He was fine, as was the person he had driven into. We suppose at this stage that we should say that it wasn't his fault, and that the other party had just pulled out right into his path without looking. It turns out that Jack has a very small dent in his front bumper, but that the other person (who was driving a small Japanese vehicle) has "considerable" damage to their vehicle......and the moral of the story? If you're going to have an accident, then driving a classic Land Rover is still a very good vehicle to be in when it occurs.

The Politician managed his day in the Assembly, but he tells us that he didn't move from his seat all day....which was just as well because, at one stage, the Deputy Bailiff suspended the sitting because there were only 24 Members in the Assembly. Dad, not having gone anywhere, was one of the few still there. His back seems to have coped, but he's pretty tired this evening.

All the others have had a normal day apparently....Mum is cooking individual cakey things for tomorrow when we have small children visiting.....remind us to be out when they arrive!! Dan is supposed to be at the Ecrehous tomorrow afternoon, so let's hope the weather improves....wasn't today such a poor effort, especially after yesterday.....but then maybe yesterday was our summer.....let's hope not.

Monday 15th. April

Steve here tonight, doing the blog for a change.

Jill and I went to Church this afternoon for the memorial service for Anne Perchard, or Mrs. P as she was always known in our house. It was a great service, which was only fitting for a great lady, and quite rightly attended by many hundreds from all over the Island and further afield. I know that Jill and I will miss her, especially at Church, where she was ever present in the choir every time we attended. I also know that she was an inspiration to both Jill and I over the last twelve months, and Anne was always there offering support to Jill during her treatment. It's true that you don't miss things until they aren't there any more, and this will be so true with Mrs. P, as I know that we will all miss her so very much. Our very deepest sympathy goes to all her family. At times like this I always try to focus on the best memories, and for me I will always remember an afternoon spent with Anne and Derek (and the dog) in the kitchen at La Ferme when I was campaigning for Deputy. We were not all agreed on who should vote for who, and where priorities should lie, and indeed, who might be the best candidate,  but none of that mattered. We just had a really good "chat" in the very best sense of the word, and, after "discussing" just about every subject under the sun, but mainly the Parish and politics, I left much the wiser. We may not have solved any major issues that afternoon, but I remember it because (as ever) of the way I was welcomed there, as I and so many others have always been over the decades. The door was always open. We're all honoured to have known Mrs. P, and to be able to call her one of our friends.

Sunday 14th April

The day started with a walk around the lanes and in the meadow- staples still in tummy, but hopefully healing up nicely.
Aerobic workout with the twins was good fun as always, and a chance to catch up with what's happening in the parish.
Open garden at Rosel manor this afternoon, bumped into lots of people we knew, even some from way out west!
Went inside the Chapel where Becky was baptised nearly 19 years ago.... brought back lots of memories.
As for todays TV viewing(not me I hasten to add) It seems to have been Grand Prix all morning and not only do I not know who won, I don't care! And Chelsea I believe lost this afternoon so what with his bad back and his fav team losing, just as well I cooked roast pork dinner to smooth troubled waters!

Either way he needs to get his back sorted out ASAP, it's ridiculous, he can't empty the dishwasher or even bend down to pick up dog mess- and as for taking tablets, he nearly qualifies for his very own weekly pill pot!

I am still in my 'Happy Bubble' and have been getting lots of giant hugs and well wishes when I impart the good news- so once again thanks everyone for all the continuing support- much appreciated!

Saturday 13th. April

The beloved dog is the most spoken about person in the house this evening....what has she been eating? For the last hour or so she has stunk the kitchen out, to the extent that some of us have had to move places, some of us have moved rooms and some of us have actually gone out. These bouts of canine flatulence are not all that regular...but boy does she make up for it when she decides to have an evening of "venting off"......as you can tell, she's very much recovering from her little op.

Dad had a repeat of yesterday....he got up early and went back to bed soon after. A change of drugs has helped a little, and he felt capable of going down to Georgetown to listen to AA's choir this afternoon. He had been planning to go to the rugby all week, but we all agreed that it was probably not the best idea to stand around in the rain all afternoon.

Bex was up with the lark and used her new computer to make a good start on a project she has to complete for College, before going off to Waitrose at lunchtime for her 8 hour stint. Tom has been watching sport and is out this evening at a meal somewhere, and Dan has had a day at home hoping that the weather is going to improve tomorrow so he can go out on the lifeboat in the morning and do another charter to the Minquiers in the afternoon.

Mum spent the first half of the day doing various sports and food shopping....she went with dad this afternoon, and this evening she is at that badminton meal that we mentioned yesterday.

That just leaves Jack...who was up all night dealing with a fire out west. It turned out that, not only did he attend, but he was the first into the burning building wearing breathing apparatus. He left the station before midnight (just after they had turned in) and only got back around 5. He went back to bed after returning home.....but has the night off this evening so he can attend a friends 30th. No work for him tomorrow of any description we suspect.

Let's hope that the sport goes well tomorrow....and we hope the Grand Prix will be more exciting than the really boring qualifying. Also we hope (for our sake) that Chelsea win tomorrow afternoon, and finally we hope that a Brit can win the Masters.....by the time we get to write tomorrow's blog we should at least know if any of them have chance.

Friday 12th. April

The GREAT news today is that Mum' blood test has come back at 6...which is no change.....which is fantastic. Nothing else is really important....but we'll fill you in with details anyway...just to send you all to sleep.

The dog has just come in from outdoors with an oyster shell (one of her favorite things) and has proceeded to start chewing and crunching her way through it. Bex has had to take it off her as it's one of those noises that grates on your nerves...well, Bex's anyway. Dog has been out quite a bit today, with another visit to the vets thrown in for good measure. That's the second visit this week.....Dad has been on to the bank to see if we can afford to eat next week.

Bex had a good morning....if you like spending money. She went off to town with Mum and came back with a shiny new Macbook pro....all paid for with her own money. She's desperate to start using it, but apparently the "data transfer" from her old machine won't be complete until 11 this evening.....very frustrating.

Dan has had a day making coffee....the sun was out and al fresco was all the go down at Castle Quay. Off  to the Rozel Bay for him tonight with SdG (who's the only uni mate left in Jersland at the moment).....well, someone has to hold up the local economy, especially as Jack is on night shift this evening.

Tom has gone to St. Brelade's this evening for an "M&S tea".....we presume that means using his cooking skills to warm up supermarket food at someone else's house.

Dad got up (of sorts), cancelled his 8 and 930 meetings, and promptly went back to bed. However, he felt better enough to strap himself up, drug himself up, and go off to two meetings over lunch....both went okay and he came home in time to for the massage he booked this morning. The family had to have a laugh when dad got back and related a story.... when the girl said she was finished massaging and, after she had left, dad could get dressed, she left the room........the old man found that he couldn't get off the couch, well not for a few minutes.....he survived to fight another day.

Mum's day was a little stressed as she waited for that call from the hospital....in the end she called them, and very soon after that the call was returned with the good news. Much relief all round as you can imagine......Ma's gone off to town for a netball meal this evening.....she has a badminton meal tomorrow.....so that means another evening of "do your own supper"....does he woman have no shame?

Saturday tomorrow if you hadn't noticed.....golf, Grand Prix, rugby, football...bring it on.

Thursday 11th. April

As usual in the Luce household, it's been a day of ups and downs....Ups for Jessie, who is very much back to normal today, and heading to the vets tomorrow to have her check up....we're sure that she will still have her staples in as she been really good at not "eating them". She's been out in the meadow today with Ma planting things....well, Ma was planting and Jess was digging....and a considerable hole at that.

The downs were for the "old man" who is without doubt the winner of today's "crock of the day" award. For some unknown reason his back has been getting steadily worse over the last few days, and today he was barely walking....anyway....he went into town for meetings this afternoon and managed to get home without having to resort to an ambulance...so that's okay. Just as well he couldn't get as far as the vegetable patch to see the hole that Jessie had dug....he would have needed more than just the one blood pressure tablet to calm him down.

Jack is on the front page of the Post tonight...yesterday he came back from work telling us about the donkey he had rescued....and tonight we see him leading the said donkey across a field in St. Ouens. We all know he will have been proud to have done the "job", but we're also pretty sure that there will be a fair amount of ribbing going on down at the station. There must be some stories that we could make up about 4 firemen and a donkey in a hole...just can't think about any at the moment.

Tom has returned to the meadow this afternoon to reacquaint (?) himself with his beloved digger, which is now repaired....until the next time it breaks. He came back saying that he really needs a "man on a spade" to help him.....dad suggested that actually it should be Tom on the spade and the old man should be driving the digger...however, we doubt that he could walk down to the meadow at the moment, so that won't be happening.

Dan went off at lunch and didn't return.....we suspect that he has gone to the Minquiers with Seafaries...another good day for him then....his trip to the Ecrehous on Tuesday ended up with mega dolphins and a 5 star review on Tripadvisor  (Dan actually got a mention!)

Bex has had another good day at ITEX and, as she has no work tomorrow (College doesn't count as work apparently) she's off to the pub with some mates for the Thursday night quiz.

That just leaves Ma, who's highlight today (not) was her blood test at the hospital this morning. It went fine but no results yet...tomorrow maybe. Plants have been purchased today for the greenhouse (toms and cucumbers) and outside (sweetpeas and other "stuff")...that's in between various sports one of which was racquetball. No puppy training tonight.....we're not really sure if Jess should bounce around with other dogs while she's still "under supervision of the vet".

Tonight's discussion points included the meat that's been discovered to have horse painkiller in it....we can't see why it isn't a best seller...certainly Pa was up for going to buy some....he's always said that animal drugs were "good stuff" for all sorts of things. Just as well he doesn't have access to any!! Chelsea are playing this evening....and Pa is frustrated that they're not on the TV...no doubt he'll be plugged in so he can listen somehow. Full day for dad tomorrow....let's hope he's a little brighter. Mum is making a "home made stir fry sauce" for supper.....in other words... kill or cure!

Wednesday 10th April

A brief blog tonight- just an update of todays hospital visit.

Hubby came with me for moral support- just as well as I very nearly 'had a moment', especially when Consultant said I needed a CT scan (suggested by the Marsden apparently )being booked for the end of May. He gave me an examination and said all seemed well, but of course I now need a blood test- so I'm back to the hospital tomorrow.

So more information to follow, although both consultant and doctor seemed pleased enough- "the proof they say is in the pudding".

Good news though for my fellow tennis/chemo partner she had her results from CA125 at 6- so I am very pleased for her!

Tuesday 9th. April

we actually got Daniel in a boat today.....6 people to the Ecrehous for a tour by Jersey Seafaris (crewed by the Barista Boy)....he said it was really good....so we assume the sea must have been better than it looked. He's back working on dry land tomorrow... coffeemaking in town for him. Jack is back fighting fires for the first time that anyone around here can remember tomorrow as well. He'll be in bed early so he can be up with the lark......as will Bex....who has to leave a little earlier tomorrow. She's been working out the last possible time that she can leave home and still get to work in time.....and this morning she timed it a little too fine.

Dad has his first early meet for a while tomorrow and is meeting Mum after lunch for the visit to the hospital....the first since officially being put on "three month check ups".

There was more gorse clearance done today...but in typical fashion we had some breakdowns. The chainsaw really got so bad that we stopped using it....and got out the good old hand tools. There nothing like a good hand saw and a sickle for getting things done. dad and Jack actually made excellent progress.....but Tom fared less well when one function on the digger suddenly stopped working. The engine cover was soon off (we could do it with our eyes closed now) and a linkage break was diagnosed as the problem.....and then we noticed the oil leaking on to one of the tracks. It wasn't long before the source of the leak was discovered....and fixed. Tom manufactured another linkage and we were ready to go again....but then Dad had to go off to a meeting in town and the "boys" decided that the weather was "going off" and, rather than get wet, they'd pack up in good time. So that's it for now...with everyone back to work tomorrow we doubt that there'll be much more done for few days....and then only when the weather improves.

Tom and Dad have fixed the (very) hot water machine in the kitchen.....Mum had actually called the company that we bought the kitchen from to ask who serviced the water heater. When she relayed the name of the service agent to Dad the air went a little blue....and the job was destined to be attempted "in house". We say attempted because Dad isn't 100% convinced that the repair will last long. A bowl has been left in the cupboard under the heater....if it's still dry in the morning we'll assume it's fixed....for now!

we have "Barely Legal Drivers" on th tele as we type tonight. the bots are all relaying stories about driving....like the time that Tom and Dan drove across England with only a packet of Starburst (that's Opal fruits to you old people) for sustinance....but hey, some of these drivers on the box really are NOT GOOD. How did they ever pass a test? but then we have the best male drivers in Jersey living in our house!

There'll be plenty of news for the blog tomorrow....stay tuned.

Monday 8th. April

This evening, the blog is back in the hands of those of us who are so busy we don't have time to proof read before posting.....okay, so there were a few mistakes last time...but usually we're multitasking while we're typing. For example, this evening we're watching reruns of Top Gear and having a discussion about the referendum AND doing the blog all at the same time....as well as arguing about who's supposed to be doing the last of the washing up. One of us had promised to do it, but then he suddenly apologised and left the house, saying that he was late for football.....and by that he means "watching" the football....on someone elses tv in town actually.

The dog has been a little better today...more time outside...more back to normal.....so normal in fact that at one point during the afternoon (while she wasn't being watched) she dug an enormous hole in one of the walkways around the vegetable beds outside. She must be improving, although she still has moments when she obviously isn't A1. She's getting lots of TLC...and back at the beloved vets tomorrow for a check up.

The other highlight of the day was that Tom and Jack got together late this afternoon and lit a bonfire to burn some of the gorse that they have been pulling out in the bottom of the meadow. Well.....they tried to light a fire. Despite advice from Dad (he who knows how to light a fire) and Jack (he who knows how to put out a fire) Tom was determined that he knew best. He had to admit that, after an hour, he had only actually succeeded in using up a lot of diesel and hadn't really burnt any gorse. More parts are required for chain saws ....the small saw just isn't coping well.....

Dan not well today...Bex answering phones at Rue des Pres...Dad at a meeting until late and Mum doing so many different sports that, if we try to list them all, this laptop will run out of battery. More tomorrow....

Sunday 7th April

The narrator really should re-read his/her blogs after composing, just to check the odd spelling error here and there!!
Brilliant night last night., over £1.400 was raised for Headway, a fantastic mixture of food, bands, raffle and auctions all at St Martin's Public Hall, I even managed to get hubby up and dancing briefly!
Such a joy to wake up to sunshine, and then be able to play nearly three hours of tennis, a bonus. Jess managed a little wander in the orchard, but wasn't up to much very subdued still, but that's not a bad thing.
bandage has come off now-healing nicely!

Saturday 6th. April

Well...just like her Mum, the dog is recovering from her "op" at a rate of knots.....but (fortunately) Mum didn't wee in her bad in her first night home from hospital! Jessie has made great strides, especially this afternoon....she's almost been getting up other usual tricks of chasing light reflections around the kitchen. We eventually managed to get her to take some pills this morning...but only after dad forced her mouth open and placed the pills on the back of her tongue...she didn't seem too upset. It may well be that the pills are what has improved her so much this afternoon. We think (hope) that it will be fairly plain sailing from her onwards....especially given that we aren't really allowed to "let her loose" for about 10 days....who's taking bets that she'll be belting around on her own after a small week?

Someone who wasn't moving at a rate of knots today was the Baristaman...who was due to go off to the Ecrehous today....it didn't happen...they brought the boat around from town this morning but decided that it really wasn't quite good enough to go. It must be really frustrating to have to concede to the weather week after week.....we just hope that the wind drops down soon so the boys can get some trips in.....Dan hasn't really had a chance to do much so far this year.

Tom and Dan have been back in the meadow this afternoon....all chainsawed up (the small saw that is, the big saw is still waiting for parts), they set off to liberate some more paths that have had trees fallen over them in the mast few months. Who knows what we will find has gone on down there.....we suspect that shortly there will be fires that will have been started....luckily we have a fireman in the family....he can call in to say "I know it looks ;like it's out of control, but it'll be okay in half an hour or so....please don't send any shiny fire engines from town".

The "rents" also took the opportunity to spend a little time in the garden this afternoon....the weather is just starting to improve enough for them to start "pottering". Dad was muttering something about parsnips.....but we're not quite sure what that means.....probably that he's planted or sown some we presume.

Grand National this afternoon.....and (along with everyone else on the planet) no one in the hosue had heard of the winner (we've already forgotten it)....and certainly hadn't put any money on it.

Bex has had a chilled day...recovering from her exams of yesterday....and no Waitrose for her this evening.

Dog sitters this evening will be Bex and Tom....everyone else is out.

Friday 5th April

Well they do say that dogs and their owners are very much alike, and whilst I agree I don't have black and white spots like Jess, (at least I didn't last time i looked), I love her happy nature and the way she springs and bounces all over the place. We do now however have matching scars on our belly, yes, she has been spayed today. She was originally going just to be micro chipped but I decided that she may as well have the 'full works'! I did suffer a fair amount of guilt pangs put out by the rest of the family noticeably the sons who thought me 'harsh' to deprive her of motherhood!
It will be ironic that it's only been over the last week that we have managed to get her to jump willingly into the car, but after the car journey and trip to the vet I hope she wont be put off! We picked her up tonight and had to carry her to the car as she was too wobbly to walk ( and 'high' on an opiate based drug!).
Love her little black/white bandage!

Bex had an exam at college today- fairly important  'networking' module, when asked how it went the reply was "Ok", standard answer, we'll wait and see. The Politician Plumber (PP) was not impressed with the bad press he received in last night's blog particularly as he was trying his best to improve the situation. To be fair he has narrowed down the trouble spot and made it much easier for the 'Official Plumber' to rectify.

The engineer and PP with some fairly vocal encouragement from me, have also 'fixed' the Internet cable. As a temporary measure it had been laying through most of the house and under doors for the last six months, ending up getting frayed and needing tape wrapped round it! With a bit of ingenuity on their part that involved bamboo poles, cable ties, rope and string plus head torches they clambered around the loft and have succeeded in threading the cable discreetly inside the cupboard. The good news is the signal is everywhere in the house, the bad news, except.......Dan's room- so no more lying in bed on his lap top then- unlucky!!

I took a friend as a guest to the Merton today firstly for 'circuit training' and then for a swim/steam etc, anyway I was querying if the jacuzzi was working before we bothered climbing in, and the "boss" said he would kindly turn it on for us- with the usual banter that went on between us  I quipped that really the only bubbles I liked were champagne ones......... anyway we had just got out to be met with the 'boss' walking over carrying two wine glasses with champagne in!! (Sprite really but hey you cant have everything!) It really was quite amusing to see the holidaymakers stunned faces trying to work out what was going on and why we were receiving specialist treatment!

Thursday 4th April

Sushi night feast- and 28 stacked plates to prove it! That was Tuesday nights menu, this evening was somewhat different as hubby and I went to the Willows day centre to run through the procedure of opening up and getting prepared for our first Gynae Support group on the 2nd May.
Now we have lots of stuff to do including publicity and sorting flyers etc out- exciting times!

A long dog walk this morning before meeting my good friend SW in St John for lunch- and plenty of chatting of course.

Hubby has been practicing at being a plumber, this involves turning off different taps/closing pipes and generally trying to find out why the water is not flowing around the system very well. He was narrowing down all the options, but I'm not sure if 'stuffing a cloth' in a pipe to see if it got wet, and then discovering that there was water all over my utility floor was exactly a 'professional' approach!!

Wednesday 3rd. April

....we're told that there was a strange moment at home this morning when Ma and Pa realised that 3 out of 4 children were "out at work"....and the forth was still asleep. The Fireman was making the most of his holiday from proper work by thumping posts again in Trinity (he had Jessie with him for the morning)....the Barista was baristering down at The Waterfront and Helpdeskgirl was helpdesking at Rue des Pres. That left the engineer in his room.....and he spent the afternoon writing a new website....he wants us to point out that he does, apparently, work until 5am every morning....but then us "normal" peeps are not up to check that are we?

Pa had a lunchtime meeting, and Ma (after her usual racquetball) went for lunch with Bex...returning to walk the dog and go down the road to meet a friend. Dad had a couple of hours off this afternoon (between meetings) and managed to go out in the green house and sow some carrot seeds. Given that he also tidied up his office, and had a clear out in the workshop, he's had a pretty mixed old day.

This evening Ma and Dan went to play badminton, Bex went to a Young Farmers meeting and Tom was still computering.....Dad came home from another meeting at 8 to find that it was only him, Tom and the dog....Jack was nowhere to be seen.....we still haven't found him.

Discussions this evening have centred on who would want to kill Joss Stone? well.....we have a few boys in our house who wouldn't mind kidnapping her.....but kill? what sort of a wierdo would you have to be......and talking of wierdos.....we note that old whathisface that governs North Korea is still being a silly boy. As Tom quite rightly pointed out, "surely they must realsie that, if they go to war with the Yanks, they'll get wiped?" We certainly hope so.....but really we just wish they'd stop messing about and go back to doing whatever they normally do in North Korea.

Did we mention that yesterday we got the digger going....well, actually going too well, as it won't now switch off (!!)...and we also had the tractor working for the first time in a while....the only problem is that we now have a broken part on the chainsaw. .....we went down in the meadow to try pulling out the gorse....conclusion?.... we need a chainsaw!! When will we find that everything works on the same day?

The forecast is for warmer weather at the week end.....there's a word we haven't heard lately ......WARMER....

Did you know that 27% of the universe is made up of dark matter? As we were saying....how do they know how much there is if you can't see it or measure it.....or (to quote Tom) you don't really know that it's even there??? Maybe by tomorrow we'll have worked it out!

Tuesday 2nd April

Tuesday 2nd April
A day beginning with mixed emotion, on the one hand a surprise visit from a neighbour that included a sympathetic ear and two huge hugs (thanks JdlH) , sadly contrasting  with the news that another dear neighbour and friend had unfortunately lost her own personal battle with Cancer and passed away. She was a remarkable lady and as well as being well known in the island had been extremely supportive to me and my family since my diagnosis , I am sure I am not alone in saying she will be missed by many. Our prayers and condolences are with her family, may she rest in peace.

Our dog went to work with Jack today, he had some ‘post’ work to do, not delivering letters, but actually thumping wooden posts in the ground and putting up fences. Jess was very well behaved and enjoyed racing around the field all morning. Meanwhile I headed off to the Merton and enjoyed gym and swim- it’s a good way for me to ‘deal’ with things, I always feel better through having had some exercise.

A supermarket shop was a definite necessity, and although knowing that I needed a fairly large amount of food why then do I always take the smaller trollies? I ended up running out of bags and piling things up on top of everything- dreading being asked for a re-scan at the checkout- but luckily not this time!
Arriving back home with a laden car Jess runs out to greet me and promptly leaps into the car boot, landing on seven bags of shopping!! After spending the last five months trying to encourage her to jump into the car, we can’t stop her now!!

I intended to drive out west today for meet up with a friend, but had to postpone it as it was getting late- plus most of the family were out in the garden/meadow and I didn’t want to miss the opportunity to get a few vital jobs done.

The grass was cut and the edges trimmed and strimmed  (hubby and I ) some landscaping of the meadow and gorse removal as attempted but proved a much harder job than first thought (I’ll leave the technicalities of the process to an engineer to describe later).

‘Day off Dan’ who couldn’t go to sea as the weather was too windy/rough, suggested out of the blue that we (as in he, Tom and I) could go to Bento (sushi restaurant in town) for some supper this evening. This ‘idea’ was mooted around the rest of the family until the other members not wanting to miss out on the ‘new dining experience’ joined us. Amazingly we all met up at the restaurant and managed to get seats, Tom and Dan being the ‘experts’ instructed us on the how and what to eat out of the various delicious dishes that were whizzing around on the conveyor belt. It was good. We did end up amassing 28 plates of food- (you have to keep the colour coded bowls till the end when they ‘add’ them up for the bill).

It is funny, dad remarked on the way home that despite it being the ‘boys’ idea, he ended up paying the bill!! Fortunately the dishes on the conveyor belt were ‘half price’ on a Monday and Tuesday- hence us all piling down there this evening!

Photos of the exciting car rally-
